Hot Air » Blog Archive » Canada - the new tax haven?

Bermuda and the Cayman Islands may have some competition for Barack Obama’s vitriol over tax havens if Canada keeps on its low-business-tax course. The Harper government in Ottawa has quietly dropped its corporate tax rate and has pressed the provinces to do the same in order to get to a low combined tax rate for businesses. American companies pressed by the threat of the Obama administration to tax overseas profits have begun to notice:

In a clear indication that Canada is starting to be considered a low-tax place to do business, Tim Hortons Inc. announced Monday plans to shift its base of operations from Delaware to Canada for tax purposes.

It is looking like if we want to survive as free men and women, we have 2 choices. We can move to Texas, or we can move to Canada.

The American Dream to me and I hope most Americans is what is laid out in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. The right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness pretty much sum it up. The key word is liberty. What is life without liberty? What kind of happiness can you pursue without liberty? The founding fathers most of all wanted liberty, to conduct their affairs how they saw fit without a distant government oppressing them. As I sit here tonight, I have this awful feeling that I think is similar to what the founding fathers had. I am sickened to think that a distant government is slowly taking my liberties away, slowly making life harder for all of us for the advancement of itself. The defiance of this government against the will of the people and the complicity of apathy from those that know better is not only making me sick but making me fearful. The founding fathers knew that they were going to make huge sacrifices to achieve what they did and that more than likely they were going to end up at the end of a rope. The odds were against them heavily to succeed. They were afraid for their lives. I am starting to feel afraid not only for my way of life, but for my life period. We are all going down a road that if not corrected is going to end up very badly for America. If this problem cannot be corrected in a civil manner it will be corrected in an uncivil manner. That is why I am afraid.

This is a very well written blog post. I share his fears.

BYE-BYE, BABYLON [Ralph Peters]

BYE-BYE, BABYLON [Ralph Peters]

OUR effort in Iraq passed a major milestone today: Our troops are leaving the cities.

Advisers remain in place. Joint patrols will still occur. And our forces will wait nearby to respond to Iraqi calls for support. But the last of the bases and US-only outposts within Iraq's urban centers will be vacated.

Terrorists have already begun testing the new security arrangements. Iraqi forces won't always pass with flying colors.

Yet this situation seemed a pipe dream not so long ago: Iraq's security forces, serving an elected government, assume primary responsibility for the good order of their own country.

We all recall the delighted leftist claims that Iraq had entered a hopeless civil war. Wrong. That Iraqis preferred al Qaeda to us. Wrong. That Shia militias represented the people. Wrong. And that Iran would seize control. Wrong again.

So, the Bush policy worked. But will he get credit in the main stream media? I think we all know the answer to that.

(IsraelNN.com) In the latest in a recent series of increased American assistance efforts for Arab and Muslim states, U.S. President Barack Obama has allocated an additional $150 million to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. The regimes leading Egypt, the Palestinian Authority, the United Arab Emirates and even Saudi Arabia have all benefited from recent American policy shifts.

Yet another sign that Obama is throwing Israel under the bus.

American Thinker Blog: 'Blacks in survey say race relations no better with Obama'

Advice: Don't put your faith in polls, but don't ignore them either. Historically, pollsters contradict each other and continually favor Democrats. Nor do I believe in polls that show massive liberal leads and speedily close in just before an election. My take? In two words: unscientific spin.

But what can we learn from the numbers game? For starters, if partisan pollsters can't hide cracks, then we know the Democrats are in trouble. The Obama-first network CNN states:

Ninety-six percent of African-Americans approve of how Obama is handling his presidency, according to a CNN/Essence Magazine/Opinion Research Corp. poll released Thursday.

This is an interesting piece. We'll chat about it on today's show.

Court rules for white firefighters over promotions

Court rules for white firefighters over promotions

WASHINGTON -- The Supreme Court has ruled that white firefighters in New Haven, Conn., were unfairly denied promotions because of their race, reversing a decision that high court nominee Sonia Sotomayor endorsed as an appeals court judge.

New Haven was wrong to scrap a promotion exam because no African-Americans and only two Hispanic firefighters were likely to be made lieutenants or captains based on the results, the court said Monday in a 5-4 decision. The city said that it had acted to avoid a lawsuit from minorities.

The ruling could alter employment practices nationwide, potentially limiting the circumstances in which employers can be held liable for decisions when there is no evidence of intentional discrimination against minorities.

Well, it looks like the wise Latina wasn't so wise after all. This is good news for the firefighters, and better news for those opposing Sotomayor.

Why stagflation is coming - Washington Times

Why stagflation is coming - Washington Times

Both the money supply and federal spending have increased at breathtaking rates over the past year, unprecedented in peacetime. The policy decisions made by the Federal Reserve Board and Congress virtually assure we will enter a period of 1970s-like stagflation.

The recovery, when it comes, will combine slow economic growth, unusually long un- and underemployment, stagnating real incomes, rising interest rates and inflation. There is little that policymakers, having made colossal mistakes, can do to prevent such an outcome. However, there are steps that can be taken to shorten the period of stagflation and return to an era of robust economic growth, good jobs and stable asset and consumer prices.

I don't believe either party has the will to take the steps needed to avert this future. So, get ready for a long, slow, painful recovery.

The Weekly Standard

The Weekly Standard

We stand on a promontory gazing at the bleached beauty of the Judean Desert. We could be looking at hills on the moon with a few human outcroppings: just down and to the left is the village of Anatot, birthplace of the prophet Jeremiah. Eleven miles to the west we see Jerusalem, with the Mount of Olives -- where tens of thousands of Jewish graves were desecrated during the Jordanian occupation of Jerusalem (1948-1967) -- standing guard; we see Ramallah, seat of the “Palestinian government,” twelve miles to the northwest; Jericho, eighteen miles to the east; and not far beyond it, Jordan. At night, the lights of Amman are visible, twinkling. Below us, a sheer drop, is Wadi Kelt, a great fissure in the summer-barren hills that fills and floods with the winter rains to tinge the desert landscape green.

Across the wadi is Mitzpeh Hagit, an “illegal outpost “named for a daughter of Kfar Adumim murdered by a Bedouin terrorist as she hiked in the crevice ten years ago. “This is a response of settlers to terror murders,” says our host, one of the original eighteen settlers of Kfar Adumim. “We don’t rush out to seek revenge by murdering in return. We respond to it and honor the murdered by establishing outposts in their names.” It doesn’t look like much. How many live there, I want to know. He shrugs. Not enough. But behind us Kfar Adumim bustles with life.

This is the history of Israel, taking desert and bringing it back to life. The Arabs in the region have never done that. Israel should get it over with and annex all the land, and go on from there.

Michelle Thinks She Was Elected Empress - Warner_Todd_Huston’s blog - RedState

The Washington Post had an interesting article on June 25 headlined, “A First Lady Who Demands Substance.” I think it was meant to highlight that fact that Michelle Obama is more than a mere first lady but is a strong, substantive person — which is, by the way, without question. Unfortunately, though, it ended up revealing a Michelle Obama that is an angry, arrogant, martinet that isn’t aware that “first lady” is an honorary title that has no proper, Constitutional role and is not an elected position with legal, legitimate powers of its own.

The story penned by Lois Romano comes on the heels of Michelle’s dismissal of her chief of staff, Jackie Norris, who was replaced by 61-year-old Susan Sher. Apparently, this switch is supposed to mark the arrival of the new Michelle Obama, the one that will have “impact” at the “fulcrum of power and policy.” To pursue this new “power” Michelle has hired a full-time speech writer and has told her staff to think “strategically.”

Impact? Power? Strategically? I have but one question: who elected you to this “power,” Michelle? I also have an answer: no one.

The power grab by this couple is scary. With the Bush's, the idea that God placed them in power kept them humble. But with the Obama's, it is just the opposite.

What You May Not Know About Speaker Pelosi's National Energy Tax Republican Leader John Boehner

Washington, Jun 26 - Speaker Pelosi’s national energy tax is going to raise electricity prices, increase gasoline prices, and ship American jobs overseas to countries like China and India. This, we know.

It would be a bureaucratic nightmare overseen by a confusing web of government agencies that would take and redistribute trillions of dollars from family budgets and workers payrolls. This, we also know. Even Agriculture Committee Chairman Collin Peterson (D-MN) admitted in the Washington Post this morning that: “The truth is, nobody knows for sure how this is going to work.” How encouraging.

But what don’t we know? Here are some facts you may not know about Speaker Pelosi’s national energy tax:

This bill is just plain scary. Contact your member of Congress and make sure to let them know that you want them to vote no.

Mark Twain wrote of Arab sloth and filth and flies.

In the 1880s, Americans forced Indians from their land to resettle Indian land with whites. Many Indians had to be killed.

This fact list is a must read for anyone who is concerned about the Middle East. Why don't the politicians in Washington get it?

Another 18% say he’s more ethical than his peers, and only 18% say his ethical standards are lower than those for most pols.

Abuna Pauolos, Patriarch of The Ethiopian Orthodox Church, was in Rome this week to meet with Pope Benedict XVI. While there, he told reporters that the time had come to reveal before the world the Holy Ark. He said that the holy container has been in the custody of his church for hundreds of years.

RealClearPolitics - Could Australia Blow Apart the Great Global Warming Scare?

As the US Congress considers the Waxman-Markey cap-and-trade bill, the Australian Senate is on the verge of rejecting its own version of cap-and-trade. The story of this legislation's collapse offers advance notice for what might happen to similar legislation in the US—and to the whole global warming hysteria.

Since the Australian government first introduced its Emission Trading Scheme (ETS) legislation—the Australian version of cap-and-trade energy rationing—there has been a sharp shift in public opinion and political momentum against the global warming crusade. This is a story that offers hope to defenders of industrial civilization—and a warning to American environmentalists that the climate change they should be afraid of just might be a shift in the intellectual climate.

Keep up the fight, friends. This is a battle we can win.

Sen. Kerry jokes: ‘Too bad’ Gov. Sarah Palin didn’t go missing - BostonHerald.com

WASHINGTON – U.S. Sen. John Kerry must have been channeling his inner Letterman yesterday.

The Bay State senator was telling a group of business and civic leaders in town at his invitation about the “bizarre’’ tale of how South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford had “disappeared for four days’’ and claimed to be hiking along the Appalachian Trail, but no one was really certain of his whereabouts.

“Too bad,’’ Kerry said, “if a governor had to go missing it couldn’t have been the governor of Alaska. You know, Sarah Palin.’’

The Democratic-centric crowd laughed.

And of course, Kerry will get a free pass for this. But there is no media bias.

SPACE.com -- Sun's Output Increasing in Possible Trend Fueling Global Warming

In what could be the simplest explanation for one component of global warming, a new study shows the Sun's radiation has increased by .05 percent per decade since the late 1970s.

The increase would only be significant to Earth's climate if it has been going on for a century or more, said study leader Richard Willson, a Columbia University researcher also affiliated with NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies.

The Sun's increasing output has only been monitored with precision since satellite technology allowed necessary observations. Willson is not sure if the trend extends further back in time, but other studies suggest it does.

"This trend is important because, if sustained over many decades, it could cause significant climate change," Willson said.

Wait a minute here! Are you trying to tell us the Sun is responsible for heating the Earth??? What a concept!!!

Just don't tell AlGore. This would ruin his whole week.

How Green Is a Nudist Vacation? - Green Inc. Blog - NYTimes.com

With summer upon us, how many green vacationers’ fancies will turn to thoughts of nudism?

Going without clothes on beaches and other vacation spots is commonly called naturism — a description that implies helping the planet, as some practitioners claim to be doing.

Spending more time with nothing on stems waste and pollution in all sorts of ways, according to an article by Kathy Blanchard on The Naturist Society’s Web site.

“Living more hours naked each day results in a dramatic drop in my laundry, which in turn reduces my water and energy use (along with my related bills),” Ms. Blanchard wrote. “It also reduces the amount of soap I release, in my case, into the Puget Sound.”

Have the lunatics on the left gone completely over the edge? I think we all know the answer to that one.

Maybe we should all move to Massachusetts and become homeless.

US wants to drop drug charges against millionaire - Yahoo! News

WASHINGTON – Federal prosecutors cited problems with evidence Monday when they asked a judge to drop charges against a Chinese-Mexican businessman accused of importing large amounts of methamphetamines to the United States.

U.S. District Judge Emmet Sullivan lambasted prosecutors at a hearing on the request to dismiss the indictment against Zhenli Ye Gon, saying, "I'm not pleased at all with anything I've heard from the United States government."

When Ye Gon was arrested in 2007 in Wheaton, Md., authorities said they had seized more than $205 million in U.S. drug profits from his Mexico City mansion. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration called it the largest drug-related cash seizure in history.

Since then, one witness has recanted and another has refused to testify, prosecutor Paul Laymon told the judge.

Laymon insisted the "overwhelming reason" that they were asking for a dismissal was because of their relationship with the Mexican government, without elaborating in open court.

Even after a private discussion, the judge seemed unimpressed and ordered a further hearing on the case next week.

I bet you are shocked and surprised by this, aren't you?

With a bullhorn in his right hand and a "no cap and trade" sign in his left, Frank DeVries was getting the word out.

"Too many Americans are standing by and letting this happen," DeVries said after a rally Monday evening to protest against proposed regulation of greenhouse gases.

DeVries and about 250 others gathered in Amend Park for the "hot-air tour" that landed in Billings. Americans for Prosperity hosted the event, complete with its red hot-air balloon and free food, to spread the message about the pitfalls of cap and trade.

The proposal would set limits on carbon dioxide released. Companies that pollute less than the cap would be allowed to trade their unused capacity to companies that overpollute.

People aren't buying in to the global warming lie anymore. And we will keep screaming about the fraud until this tax bill dies.

A much anticipated meeting Thursday in Paris between Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and US Mideast envoy George Mitchell has been canceled, The Jerusalem Post has learned.

Instead, Defense Minister Ehud Barak will be going to the US on Monday to meet with Mitchell. It will be Barak's second visit to Washington this month.

The Netanyahu-Mitchell meeting was expected to deal with the lingering settlement construction dispute between Jerusalem and Washington, and attempt to find a formula on the matter that would be satisfactory to both sides.

According to diplomatic officials, the meeting was canceled because both sides needed more time to prepare.

Christians barred from sidewalk handouts at Arab festival (OneNewsNow.com)

DETROIT, MI - A federal judge has denied an evangelical group's request for permission to hand out Christian literature on sidewalks at an Arab festival in Dearborn, Michigan.

U.S. District Judge Nancy Edmunds denied Anaheim, Calif.-based Arabic Christian Perspective's request for a temporary restraining order. The group describes itself in its court filing as "a national ministry established for the purpose of proclaiming the Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ to Muslims ...(that) travels around the country attending and distributing Christian literature at Muslim festivals and mosques."

A lawyer for the group said it would seek a permanent injunction against the city of Dearborn. "It's not over," said Robert J. Muise of the Thomas More Law Center, an Ann Arbor-based Christian rights advocacy group.

Seems to me there is a double standard developing here. And Christians always seem to get the short end of the stick. Hope these people will fight for their free speech rights.

The United States says it has deployed anti-missile defenses around Hawaii, following reports that North Korea is preparing to fire its most advanced ballistic missile in that direction to coincide with the U.S. Independence Day holiday next month.

Last week, the communist regime vowed to bolster its nuclear arsenal and threatened war to protest U.N. sanctions in the wake of its May 25 nuclear test. It conducted its first nuclear test in April, and there are suspicions it is preparing for a third.

The US needs to do more than this. They need to make it clear that any missile shot in our direction will be answered by turning North Korea into a glass parking lot. That is the one thing they might understand.

Big Victory!!!

Good news for Mr. Tim Latham, the Lawrence High School teacher who was fired for his political beliefs. Thanks to the pressure put on by students, parents, and the general public, Mr. Latham has gotten his job back.

Here is a letter from Latham's attorney...

June 18, 2009
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Perry, KS. Caleb Stegall issued the following statement today on behalf of his client,
Tim Latham, in the wake of this afternoon’s decision by Superintendent Weseman that:
“Having considered all information submitted … I find that there were
inconsistencies in the evaluation process. Because of my commitment to
the highest standards, I conclude that Mr. Latham’s teaching contract with
the District should, and will be continued for 2009-2010.”
With this ruling, Mr. Latham has been fully vindicated and, I am pleased to announce,
will be returning to his old teaching post at Lawrence High School next year. This
represents a tremendous victory for free speech, for the open and robust exchange of
ideas, and for the American form of self-government. Mr. Latham’s victory
demonstrates that where there is government abuse, ordinary citizens in America still
have recourse to civic engagement and the mechanisms of self-government to correct
those abuses. Today is a day the Lawrence community ought to take great pride in, and
the bulk of the credit goes to Mr. Latham’s students who—contrary to the common

The GOP Can Stop ObamaCare - WSJ.com

The GOP Can Stop ObamaCare - WSJ.com

It's extremely unlikely that Republicans will be able to pass their own health-care plan in this Congress. But in politics you can't beat something with nothing, so it is critical that the GOP offers an alternative to President Barack Obama's government-run monstrosity.

Americans will listen more closely to Republicans if they make empirical and specific arguments against Mr. Obama's attempted government takeover of the nation's health system. But they must also offer proposals that families, small-businesspeople and health-care providers will applaud.

This is hopeful news from a man who knows how the system works.

Morning Bell: Accelerating Us Off a Cliff » The Foundry

Morning Bell: Accelerating Us Off a Cliff » The Foundry

Speaking to House Democrats at their Kingsmill Resort & Spa retreat last month, President Barack Obama defended his economic stimulus plan, claiming: “[We] are not going to get relief by turning back to the same policies that for the last eight years doubled the national debt and threw our economy into a tailspin. … If you’re headed for a cliff, you’ve got to change direction.” Our public policy definitely needs a change in direction. But the Obama Administration’s budget is not a change in direction. Instead, it is a foot on the accelerator taking us off that cliff

The conclusion from this piece. Bush was bad for our economy, and Obama is worse. I think I can agree with that.

Right Truth: Israel's new toys

A hovercraft designed to evacuate wounded soldiers from an urban battlefield, an unmanned helicopter and a kamikaze drone [were] unveiled to the public on Monday at Israel's official pavilion at the 48th Paris Air Show.

Twelve Israeli companies - including Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), Rafael, Urban Aeronautics and Elbit Systems - will present their wares at the Israeli national pavilion, which cost over NIS 6 million to erect at the Le Bourget expo center.

Defense Minister Ehud Barak flew to Paris on Sunday to attend the opening.

That is some amazing stuff they are talking about in this story. Israel can benefit from these "toys."

Breaking: First Democrat questions Obama over AmeriCorps IG firing Washington Examiner

Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill has become the first Democrat to question the White House over the firing of AmeriCorps inspector general Gerald Walpin. McCaskill, who, like Republican Sen. Charles Grassley, is a champion of inspectors general, co-wrote the 2008 legislation requiring the president to give 30 days' notice, and cause, before firing an inspector general. In a statement released this afternoon, McCaskill says that the reason the president gave for firing Walpin -- that the president no longer has "the fullest confidence" in Walpin -- is, in McCaskill's words, "not sufficient." And McCaskill is calling on the White House to offer a fuller explanation as soon as possible.

There certainly are Democrats with integrity, and McCaskill seems to be one. I pray there will be more who will speak up and take this dictatorial president down a couple of notches.

Attempted Iran media clampdown meets Internet age - Yahoo! News

CAIRO – Iran clamped down Tuesday on independent media in an attempt to control images of election protests, but pictures and videos leaked out anyway — showing how difficult it is to shut off the flow of information in the Internet age.

The restrictions imposed by the government made such social-networking sites as Twitter and Flickr more prominent — with even the U.S. State Department calling on Twitter to put off a scheduled shutdown for maintenance.

Iranians were posting items online, but it wasn't known how much of that information was being seen by others inside the country. And although some of the posts on Twitter appeared to be from users in Tehran, others clearly were not.

Social media is changing the way people get information. I get much of my news these days via Twitter. The links posted by the folks I follow are the best. It is how I get much of what you read here.

Discord grows over public health care plan - USATODAY.com

WASHINGTON — The mood was upbeat in early March when scores of powerful lawmakers and lobbyists joined President Obama in the East Room of the White House to talk about fixing the nation's health care system. Still, Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, rose to tell Obama that many Republicans had a problem with his plan to let the government compete with private insurers.
"There's a lot of us that feel that the government is an unfair competitor," Grassley said. "We have to keep what we have now strong, and make it stronger."

Three months later, disagreement has turned to discord over a key element of Obama's health care prescription: his insistence on a "public plan" to compete with private insurers. America's Health Insurance Plans, an industry trade group, is joined by the American Medical Association, U.S. Chamber of Commerce and others that have expressed misgivings about greater government involvement.

This shows that if we continue the battle, we can defeat this horrible plan. Keep fighting friends.

Rural Democrats differ with Barack Obama - Lisa Lerer and Jonathan Martin - POLITICO.com

Angered by White House decisions on everything from greenhouse gases to car dealerships, congressional Democrats from rural districts are threatening to revolt against parts of President Barack Obama’s ambitious first-year agenda.

“They don’t get rural America,” said Rep. Dennis Cardoza, a Democrat who represents California’s agriculture-rich Central Valley. “They form their views of the world in large cities.”

Cardoza’s critique was aimed at Obama’s Environmental Protection Agency, but it echoes complaints rural-district Democrats have about a number of Obama administration decisions.

Here is another part of Obama's base which appears to be pealing off. This continues to have all the makings of a one term president.

American Thinker Blog: Obama starts to get radioactive among Jewish voters

Robert Wexler was the first Jewish Congressman to carry water for Barack Obama and his love and support for Israel during the Democratic nominating contest. Now the Florida Congressman is creating some space between Obama and himself, while trying to rehabilitate Obama a bit among his Jewish constituents.

Many Jewish voters in Wexler's district, South Florida, New York, and New Jersey, now regard Obama as hostile to Israel (he is), and are feeling buyer's remorse. Democratic members of the Senate and Congress from these areas are a bit terrified.

All I can say is it's about time.

Sarah Palin Accepts David Letterman's Apology for 'Coarse' Jokes - Celebrity Gossip Entertainment News Arts And Entertainment - FOXNews.com

Sarah Palin has accepted comedian David Letterman’s apology made during Monday night’s broadcast of “The Late Show” for crude jokes made about her and her teen daughters last week.

In a statement to FOXNews.com early Tuesday, the Alaska governor said, "Of course it's accepted on behalf of young women, like my daughters, who hope men who 'joke' about public displays of sexual exploitation of girls will soon evolve."

"Letterman certainly has the right to 'joke' about whatever he wants to, and thankfully we have the right to express our reaction," Palin said. "This is all thanks to our U.S. Military women and men putting their lives on the line for us to secure America's Right to Free Speech - in this case, may that right be used to promote equality and respect."

Once again, Sarah Palin is all class. I am ready to drop the Letterman mess now. We'll let him go back to being a second rate, washed up comic, like he was before the flap.

America's Fatal Attraction -- David Limbaugh -- GOPUSA

America's Fatal Attraction -- David Limbaugh -- GOPUSA

Excuse my mastery of the obvious, but I have to believe the greatest obstacle to America's return to policy sanity is the electorate's cultish adoration of Barack Obama.

If it weren't for this disturbing phenomenon -- not to discount a healthy dose of blind partisanship -- it is inconceivable that the majority of people would tolerate Obama's dismantling of America's free market system, his returning America to a pre-9/11 mindset against terrorists, his increasing usurpations of power, and his corrupt ties and practices, from the public funding of ACORN to the summary dismissal of the case against the Black Panthers to his firing of inspector general Gerald Walpin apparently for uncovering corruption by Obama's friends.

I don't quite understand how people, especially religious people, can place their trust for salvation in a fellow mortal, but history shows they do, and present-day America shows they are. From MSNBC's Chris Matthews' admitting Obama sends a thrill up his leg to audience members' fainting at his speeches to young girls' kissing his statue like brainless bookends, the trend continues unabated.

People wonder why I use the term "messiah" to describe Barak Obama. It is because he has become a sort of religious leader. It is truly a cult of personality. And the followers of that cult are leading this country in a bad direction.

DRUDGE REPORT: ABC TURNS PROGRAMMING OVER TO OBAMA 2009®

On the night of June 24, the media and government become one, when ABC turns its programming over to President Obama and White House officials to push government run health care -- a move that has ignited an ethical firestorm!

Highlights on the agenda:

ABCNEWS anchor Charlie Gibson will deliver WORLD NEWS from the Blue Room of the White House.

The network plans a primetime special -- 'Prescription for America' -- originating from the East Room, exclude opposing voices on the debate.

This is incredible. I can't believe an American television network would do this kind of thing.

Silver linings are deceptive and often hard to find, but that might be a tiny sliver of silver in that dark cloudbank over Iran. Barack Obama got notice from the election results that his tongue, golden and honeyed though it may be, is no match for reality.

If Iranian voters had thrown Mahmoud Ahmadinejad into the street, the American president would have assumed that he was the One who did it, and the American press would have led the hosannas for the messiah from the south side of Chicago. Just a few more speeches, a few more respectful bows toward Mecca, and all the rough places would be made smooth and plain. But now even Mr. Obama must wake up and smell the tear gas.

There is some true wisdom in this piece. It is the reason you have not heard me on the air getting all hot and bothered about the Iranian election.

My prayers are with the rebels in Iran. But reality says they will fail.

Crops under stress as temperatures fall - Telegraph

Crops under stress as temperatures fall - Telegraph

For the second time in little over a year, it looks as though the world may be heading for a serious food crisis, thanks to our old friend "climate change". In many parts of the world recently the weather has not been too brilliant for farmers. After a fearsomely cold winter, June brought heavy snowfall across large parts of western Canada and the northern states of the American Midwest. In Manitoba last week, it was -4ºC. North Dakota had its first June snow for 60 years.

There was midsummer snow not just in Norway and the Cairngorms, but even in Saudi Arabia. At least in the southern hemisphere it is winter, but snowfalls in New Zealand and Australia have been abnormal. There have been frosts in Brazil, elsewhere in South America they have had prolonged droughts, while in China they have had to cope with abnormal rain and freak hailstorms, which in one province killed 20 people.

And the new crisis is..........GLOBAL COOLING!!! Oy Vey!!!

AN OPEN LETTER TO PRESIDENT OBAMA

Dear President Obama:

You are the thirteenth President under whom I have lived and unlike any of the others, you truly scare me.

You scare me because after months of exposure, I know nothing about you.

You scare me because I do not know how you paid for your expensive Ivy League education and your upscale lifestyle and housing with no visible signs of support.

You scare me because you did not spend the formative years of youth growing up in America and culturally you are not an American.

This letter covers nearly every topic I would have hit. About the only thing he left out was the war on terror, Israel, Iran, and North Korea.

Secretary of State Ron Thornburgh plans to drop out of the 2010 race for Kansas governor.

His departure would clear the path for U.S. Sen. Sam Brownback, who also sought the Republican nomination.

"After much thoughtful reflection," Thornburgh said, "a run for governor is not meant to be."

This is a huge story. I like Ron Thornburgh, and I believe he is all class. But I also admire Sam Brownback, and pray we can unify around him next year.

Lawrence - In a place where fitting in is everything, U.S. History teacher Tim Latham says because he did not fit in politically at Lawrence High School his job is on the line.

“He was a good teacher,” said Chloe Mercer, a recent Lawrence High School graduate and former student of Tim Latham.

“He actually kept me interested. He taught it so well,” said Shelby Lewis also one of Tim Latham’s former students and a Lawrence High School junior.

Despite these students opinions about Latham it appears the Lawrence School District does not agree. The first-year teacher said he received a non-renewal of contract notice at the end of this year.

A local version of a story I posted during the week. Thank you Shawna for the link.

If you live in Lawrence, you need to scream loud and long for this teacher.

So, Republicans, you’re looking for people who can serve as faces of a party on the upswing. What qualities would we want to see in such people?

Maybe these:

They’ve served in public office and have actually governed effectively.

Rather than just talking about fiscal responsibility, they’ve made it happen under their watch.

When possible, they’ve made sure the private sector would take the lead in crucial initiatives.

They’ve taken on corrupt, entrenched interests to make government more responsive to the people it serves, even when those interests were fellow Republicans.

They pull no punches in criticizing Democrats, but they do so with a positive outlook and a pleasant demeanor.

They’re not intimidated by the inevitable crap they will catch from the media, celebrities and whomever else.

They have an enthusiastic following upon which to build.

Finally, if you’ve got all of the above, it can’t hurt if you also look fantastic.

Republicans, would you like people with some or most of these qualities to be the faces of a resurgent political party? Damn right you would. Guess what. There’s one person who possesses all eight.

Sarah Palin.

Go Sarah!!!

Sigh...We would be much better off with this man in the White House.

An Anti-Business President

An Anti-Business President

Is President Obama anti-business? The obvious answer is yes. Yet he insists he's a free-market guy who hates "meddling in the private sector" but has been forced to. So in deciding whether he's anti-business, let's be fair and judge Obama by nonideological and nonpartisan standards. I have four criteria: his appointments, his policies, his decisions, and his own words.

Fred nails it.

Government Motors Flexes Muscle | Defense of the Republic

Government Motors Flexes Muscle Defense of the Republic

Most people in the U.S. do not care about Nascar nor even racing. Yes, it’s a popular sport among certain demographics and regions, but overall it’s not the focus of American Culture. One would classify stick and ball sports as the primary sports even though two of the three ranks below Nascar in TV ratings.

The reason for this post is more political. Government motors is pulling out of participation in Nascar. Why is that news? The majority of stock car racing fans are members of the opposition party. Nascar is a symbol of Southern. The sport grew from moonshining and blossomed in the SouthEast, becoming known as a “redneck” sport.

Cars are an American love affair, a tradition as the phrase, Mom, Apple Pie and Chevrolet reflects. We loved to drive for pleasure. Those days have ended, most of us cannot to go out for a drive. Our democracy, our traditional values and aspects of our culture are under attack by the Marxists.

This is far from the biggest issue out there. But it is yet another wedge between this government and the regular folks who live in flyover country. 2012 can't come fast enough.

Kansas history teacher fired for conservative “bias” « The Constitutional Alamo

The Lawrence (Ks.) High School’s displeasure with Tim Latham began early in the school year.

The 44-year old teacher, who was in his first year at the Lawrence school but has taught for a total of 19 years, was called to the assistant principal’s office in September. In that meeting, Jan Gentry told Latham of her concerns. His web site was too patriotic–it featured links to the Air Force, the Army, and other branches of service.

“I mean, I teach American history and government,” Latham told FOXNews’ Joshua Miller. “We had been in school not even a month.”

Is this just an isolated incident in the People's Republic of Lawrence, or is it something more? I fear it is more common than we know.

In a show of cross-party unity, Ohio Democratic Congressman Dennis Kucinich became the bill’s 218th co-sponsor, pushing it over the threshold for debate in Congress.

The bill, which achieved its 222nd co-sponsorship on Thursday, has been in consideration by the House Financial Services Committee since Feb. 26.

This is an important bill. The Fed has been accountable to nobody. That has to end.

Should Bibi Give in to Obama? Israelis Say 'No' - Inside Israel - Israel News - Israel National News

(IsraelNN.com) Most Israelis do not believe that Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu should buckle to pressure by U.S. President Barack Obama to freeze all construction in Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria. A poll conducted this week by the Ma'agar Mochot (Brain Trust) survey firm showed that a decisive majority of the Israeli public believes there is no need to give in to America's demands.

Of the 503 respondents to the survey, 56 percent said Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu does not need to agree to the construction freeze, while 37 percent said he needs to give in. Another seven percent were unsure.

Respondents who defined themselves as religiously observant were the most likely to say that American demands can safely be ignored. Ninety-seven percent of religious respondents said Netanyahu does not need to accept U.S. demands, but only 42 percent of non-observant respondents said the same.

This is good news. Clearly, Israel is putting more trust in the God who gave them the land than the false messiah who wants to take it away.

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin said David Letterman’s explanation of a joke about her daughter is “weak” and accused him of continuing a political double standard that began during the presidential campaign.

“Remember in the campaign, Barack Obama said family’s off limits – you don’t talk about my family – and the candidate that must be obeyed, everybody adhered to that and they did leave his family alone,” Palin said in an interview with Matt Lauer on NBC’s “Today” show. “They haven’t done that on the other side of the ticket and it has continued to this day.”

Letterman made a joke about adult men having sex with a Palin teenage daughter. The joke appeared to be about her 14-year-old daughter, Willow. Letterman later said he said he was referring to Palin’s daughter Bristol, who is 18.

She said she isn’t buying Letterman’s explanation, calling it a “very convenient excuse” and that anyone who does is “extremely naïve.”

“It took him a couple days to think of that excuse,” she said.

I love that Gov. Palin is not taking this lightly, and that she is fighting back. I am praying for her, and I hope this doen't keep her from running for President in 2012.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey shows that 40% would vote for their district’s Democratic congressional candidate while 40% would choose the Republican.

Support for Democrats is up two points from last week, while support for the GOP is up three points. Support for the GOP is just one point below its highest level found over the past year. Last week’s results for the Democrats tied the lowest level of support for the party during the same period.

Voters not affiliated with either party now favor Republicans by a 38% to 21% margin.

I have been saying for weeks that the public is beginning to come to their senses. This autocratic democratic party rule will not last. What we need to do between now and November of 2010 is try to limit the damage by any means possible. Remember that new government programs instituted during liberal administrations rarely die. So, we need to work hard now. to prevent them from being born.

Well, I'm glad that's over! Now that our silver-tongued president has gone to Cairo to soothe Muslims' hurt feelings, they love us again! Muslims in Pakistan expressed their appreciation for President Barack Obama's speech by bombing a fancy hotel in Peshawar this week.

Operating on the liberal premise that what Arabs really respect is weakness, Obama listed, incorrectly, Muslims' historical contributions to mankind, such as algebra (actually that was the ancient Babylonians), the compass (that was the Chinese), pens (the Chinese again) and medical discoveries (huh?).

But why be picky? All these inventions came in mighty handy on Sept. 11, 2001! Thanks, Muslims!!

I love reading Ann Coulter. The sad thing is, her humor is laced with too much truth. I guess you can't make this stuff up.

One of the saddest aspects of the tragedies such as yesterday's is that they must instantly play out within our noxious political culture. It's really sickening to see how liberals can hear that a security guard got shot to death in a an attack on an institution dedicated to memorializing the systematic murder of millions of innocent people, and instantly think of how they can exploit the event to score cheap political points. But I don't think conservatives are innocent here either, and I don't think the way to respond to the absurd claims on the left is to try to turn the tables in an attempt to tie liberals to this atrocious act of violence. At some point, we have to say, enough is enough. This has got to stop.

Philip Klein is right on the money here. This was a sick man, who committed a sick crime. we should not try to read anything more into this. To do so would dishonor the memory of the six-million who died in the very Holocaust the museum memorializes.

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Sam Brownback today commented on his meeting with Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor. He met with her yesterday afternoon in the Capitol.

“I asked for and appreciated my meeting with Judge Sotomayor today,” said Brownback. “I wanted to hear more from her as I have serious concerns about her philosophy as it relates to an activist judiciary. Unfortunately, I did not hear anything in our meeting that allayed those concerns. As Chief Justice Roberts said, a justice should be an impartial umpire, not a player in the game. I am afraid Judge Sotomayor wants to be more of a player than an umpire.”

I am pleased that Brownback sees the flaws in this nominee. I am confident he will Join Pat Roberts, who has already said he will vote against her.

This is good news. Even reasonable Democrats are realizing that this bill would be a disaster for our economy.

Reinventing Conservatism - HUMAN EVENTS

Conservative foreign and national-security policies do not need remaking, rebranding or remessaging. They need not be escorted by prefixes or adjectives, nor do they need "moderating."

Conservative foreign policy is unabashedly pro-American, unashamed of American exceptionalism, unwilling to bend its knee to international organizations, and unapologetic about the need for the fullest range of dominant military capabilities. Its diplomacy is neither unilateralist nor multilateralist, but chooses its strategies, tactics, means and methods based on a hard-headed assessment of U.S. national interests, not on theologies about process. Most especially, conservatives understand that allies are different from adversaries, and that each should be treated accordingly.

I like this piece by John Bolton. We conservatives need to remind ourselves of these facts, so we don't bow to the never ending pressure put on us by the mainstream media.

Jake Tapper apparently caught the White House flat-footed with a question they should have already had answered before bringing Ahmed “FoopieGhailani to New York City for trial. Tapper asked Robert Gibbs what would happen to Ghailani if a jury failed to convict him on any of the more than 200 charges of murder and terrorism related to the two 1998 embassy bombings in Tanzania and Kenya. Gibb’s essentially shrugged:

Yesterday, despite repeated questioning, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs refused to answer whether the Obama administration will free Ahmed Ghailani if he’s found not guilty in court. The Obama administration flew the accused terrorist from Guantanamo to New York yesterday to try him for his alleged role in the 1998 embassy bombings.

“I’m not going to get into hypotheticals about how certain cases may or may not play out,” Gibbs said.

This is typical of this administration. "We have no plan if something goes wrong with our plan."

It was a sobering breakfast with one of the smartest Republicans on Capitol Hill. We can fix a lot of bad stuff President Barack Obama might do, he told me. But if Mr. Obama signs into law a "public option," government-run insurance program as part of health-care reform we won't be able to undo the damage.

I'd go the Republican member of Congress one further: If Democrats enact a public-option health-insurance program, America is on the way to becoming a European-style welfare state. To prevent this from happening, there are five arguments Republicans must make.

The wisdom of Karl Rove shines though in this piece. I just hope and pray Republicans are wise enough to listen.

The question that’s been preying on my mind is who is best suited to study those strange beings known as liberals. It strikes me that they’d be fit subjects for psychiatrists, who might be in a position to figure out why they revere the people they do — people such as Hugo Chavez, Fidel Castro, Al Gore and Ted Kennedy — men who haven’t a single notable accomplishment to their name, aside from either winning elections or eliminating them altogether. Or perhaps it would be more appropriate for biologists to delve into the left-wing organism, and determine how it is possible that creatures without brains could have survived so long in an often hostile environment.

A topic worthy of study. :)

500 tons of uranium shipped from Iraq, Pentagon says - CNN.com

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The United States secretly shipped out of Iraq more than 500 tons of low-grade uranium dating back to the Saddam Hussein era, the Pentagon said Monday.

The U.S. military spent $70 million ensuring the safe transportation of 550 metric tons of the uranium from Iraq to Canada, said Pentagon spokesman Brian Whitman.

The shipment, which until recently was kept secret, involved a U.S. truck convoy, 37 cargo flights out of Baghdad to a transitional location, and then a transoceanic voyage on board a U.S.-government-owned ship designed to carry troops to a war zone, he said.

The "yellowcake" uranium transfer was requested by the Iraqi government at the encouragement of the U.S. government, Whitman said.

Now, do those of us who supported the Bush policy get to say I told you so?

Why is Barack Obama spending so much time focusing on Israeli settlements in the West Bank? Two thoughtful explanations of the widening dispute on the settlements issue have been developed by Dore Gold and George Friedman.

What is clear is that Obama has chosen to pick a fight with Israel. Friedman argues Obama has chosen his fight carefully, on an issue on which the Jewish community both in Israel and the US is split, and therefore resistance will be weaker. The question of course is why? Is it because Obama believes he will now get more support in the Muslim world for US actions in Iraq and Afghanistan if he appears to be cutting Israel loose? How likely is this? What kind of support in each country does Obama expect to get if only Israel froze settlement growth? Could it be that the policy people around Obama actually believe a resolution of the Israeli Palestinian conflict is within reach if only settlement activity were totally frozen? I have trouble believing this level of naïveté exists in the Administration, given the number of people who have been involved in failed peace processing efforts over the last few decades.

While it is interesting to try to figure out why "the messiah" does what he does, it doesn't change one fact. Israel is now in danger because of his policies. And a real messiah would never abandon his people.

Israeli TV newscasters Tuesday night interpreted a photo taken Monday in the Oval Office of President Obama talking on the phone with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as an "insult" to Israel.

They saw the incident as somewhat akin to an incident last year, when the Iraqi reporter threw a shoe at President Bush in Baghdad.

It is considered an insult in the Arab world to show the sole of your shoe to someone. It is not a Jewish custom necessarily, but Israel feels enough a part of the Middle East after 60 years to be insulted too.

I don't know whether or not the president did this on purpose. But he should have known the Arab world would read this into it. Now, has Obama run out of apologies, or does he have one left for the nation of Israel?
