MinimumSecurity El Dorado Unit to Close

MinimumSecurity El Dorado Unit to Close

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ The El Dorado Correctional Facility will close its minimum security North Unit by July 1 because of budgets cuts.

Corrections Department Secretary Roger Werholtz said Tuesday the agency must cut $6 million in the fiscal year 2010 budget. He said closing the unit will save $1.2 million and the 102 inmates will be transferred to other locations.

The department is in the process of placing inmates at several facilities, which has resulted in overcrowding in some places.

So, we have a state where all kinds of social programs are being funded, but we don't have the money to properly house criminals. Seems like some priorities are out of whack here, don't you think?
