The Topeka Metropolitan Transit Authority needs a mill levy increase of “about 1.983 mills” for next year to operate at its current level, Janlyn Nesbett-Tucker, TMTA president and chief executive officer, said Wednesday.
Nesbett-Tucker spoke the day after the Topeka City Council voted 7-3 Tuesday evening to approve a charter ordinance that raises the cap from 3 mills to 5 mills for next year on the property tax levy imposed by the financially strapped TMTA, the city’s bus agency. A 2-mill increase would generate about $2 million in revenue and would raise property taxes on a $100,000 house by $23.
City attorney Jackie Williams told council members Tuesday they will decide during the city’s budget process specifically how much of the extra 2 mills they will let TMTA levy. The council should make that decision in late July.
This is hard for me because I have a very good friend who works as a Topeka Transit bus driver. But I have to come down against the tax levy. And if anyone wants to start the petition, contact me at steveforman1960@gmail.com, and I will give you airtime on the Steve Forman Show to help you get the needed signatures.
