Could big money haul hurt Harry Reid? - Carol E. Lee - POLITICO.com

LAS VEGAS – Sen. Harry Reid has made no secret of his plans to shore up a massive war chest to scare off challengers and aid his re-election bid.

But could Reid’s boasting that he will raise $25 million to keep his seat actually hurt him?

Washington Republicans have criticized the majority leader for his glitzy Las Vegas fund-raiser Tuesday night, where donors could pay $29,600 to have their picture taken with President Obama, but Nevada Republicans could go after Reid’s push to kick off the most expensive race in the state’s history during a recession.

“It will hurt him if he keeps talking about raising that kind of money when we have record unemployment and a record budget deficit,” said Sue Lowden, chairwoman of the Nevada Republican Party. “The thought of someone saying they have to raise $25 million to win is astonishing.”

Do you want to know why Republicans don't win more elections? Do you really believe you can run against the big money by complaining about the money? This is at best a false hope. If the GOP can't come up with a better campaign strategy, they might as well not bother putting up a candidate against Reid.
