TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ The Kansas House has rejected a bill to balance the state budget, with some members complaining it cut spending too much.
The vote Friday night was 62-53 against giving the bill first-round approval.
The action means members will have to try again to draft a plan for covering the projected $328 million deficit in the budget that takes effect July 1.
Some House members want to look more at boosting state revenues to help eliminate the shortfall.
This is a scary vote. I would expect this type of result in the Senate, but the House is usually more fiscally conservative. This doesn't bode well for the prospects for avoiding massive tax increases.
There will not be massive tax increases. The governor and the Legislature agree on that. Yes some tax cuts may be delayed, but there really is not a lot of room to cut more spending. I know it's easy to say to cut spending, but I want concrete examples of where you would cut.
ReplyDeleteI would cut out funding for the Kansas Technology Enterprise Corporation and Kansas Inc. Let's be honest when Republicans talk about reducing the size of government that's all it is just talk. If I'm wrong then why didn't the Republican majority in the state Legislature adopt the governor's recommendations to eliminate these two agencies? My guess is if it had been a Republican governor then they would have.
