Median cables to reduce crashes | CJOnline.com

Median cables to reduce crashes CJOnline.com

Kansas highway officials said Tuesday they would begin installing cables in medians in Shawnee and Sedgwick counties to lower the number of crossover crashes.

The mile-long Shawnee County project, which is located on US-75 highway from approximately N.W. 25th to N.W. 35th streets, will be installed in the spring of 2010. Cables will be placed on K-96 highway near Wichita later that year.

The Kansas Department of Transportation said the intent is reduce the number of traffic deaths due to crossover accidents on busy stretches of roadway. Such fatal crashes in Missouri have dropped since that state started installing the cables in 2000.

This seems like a typical government fix for a problem which isn't that much of a problem. And the comments at the bottom of the story suggest that these cables might cause a new danger for motorcycle riders. Oh, and we are not even installing the cables at the location which triggered the study.

Seems like a poor use of valuable transportation money if you ask me.
