Brownback Heading to Gitmo

Brownback Heading to Gitmo

WASHINGTON (AP) _ Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback is heading to Guantanamo Bay to review detainee operations at the U.S. base in Cuba.

Brownback is among the most ardent opponents of bringing the detainees to the U.S. Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth, the military's only maximum security prison. The Kansas Republican and other members of Congress will visit Guantanamo on Friday.

President Barack Obama signed an executive order directing the Pentagon to close Guantanamo, where some 240 detainees are being held.

Why is Brownback so against this move? I mean, there could be economic development written all over this. Just think of the tourism dollars it could bring. To this day, people visit a small motel in Junction City just to see where the Oklahoma City bombing was planned. Don't you think people will visit Leavenworth just to see where the terrorists are being held?

And think of the educational opportunities for the students at Fort Leavenworth. I mean, I can think of no better way to rehearse enhanced interrogation techniques than on real terrorists.

Clearly, Brownback isn't seeing the big picture here.
