Members of the House Republican leadership team have earned all the criticism being heaped upon them now for spreading bonuses and raises among some political appointees in advance of the 2009 legislative session.
That the criticism comes from the Kansas Democratic Party and others upset with attempts to slash the earnings of state employees makes it no less deserved.
Legislators knew long before the session began that some significant financial surgery would be required to balance the current year's budget and more cutting would be needed to craft a budget for the 2010 fiscal year, which begins July 1. Salary cuts, furloughs or layoffs hadn't yet been proposed as ways to curtail state spending, but legislators knew they would have tough decisions to make once they convened.
In that environment, House leaders authorized an additional $30,000 for four Republican staff members.
This Capital-Journal editorial is right on the money. I am a bit surprised there isn't more outrage about this.
