KC Suburb to Allow Test of Urban Chickens

KC Suburb to Allow Test of Urban Chickens

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (AP) _ Two brothers have moved one step closer to getting a permit to raise chickens in the Kansas City suburb of Overland Park.

The Overland Park Planning Commission voted 7-4 Monday to approve a test permit after hearing mixed testimony from neighbors. The final decision will be made by the City Council in June.

David Crupper says he wants the chickens for fresh eggs. Four chickens already are are living in a homemade coop in his backyard.

I would think that with the current state of the economy, raising chickens might be an attractive way to stretch the food budget. We may be coming to a day that people will want to be more self sufficient. Maybe Topeka should watch the Overland Park experiment.
